Job Description
The Senior Drilling Superintendent takes Total Ownership, including providing leadership and management, for the safe, efficient, and compliant performance of rig operations, ranging from bid and tender, pre-operations, commissioning, and operations. The Drilling Sr. Superintendent is responsible to ensure that operations are executed in compliance with company guidelines, policies and procedures. This includes ensuring compliance with all company, client, and provincial or federal rules and regulations.
Essential functions
- Provides visible leadership with Total Ownership Attitude instilling Operational Discipline (including competency, safety tools, key performance indicators, audit and assessment, and procedural discipline) in all aspects of the scope of work.
- Prepares the division for safe, efficient, and compliant performance through planning and execution activities to include development and execution of: o organizational structures o job descriptions o competency assurance for each operational role, including training; knowledge, skills, and abilities; ATO/ACO; and performance management o work safe procedures; o maintenance system; and o all other systems, standards, and activities required or reasonably necessary to complete the company’s scope of work.
- Ensures operations are conducted in a safe and professional manner.
- Promotes operational excellence through Operational Discipline.
- Responsible for supporting Operations Superintendent in developing and achieving the strategic plan for the division.
- Acts as liaison between customers and Company’s rig leadership to ensure customers’ drilling programs are successfully completed, always with a focus on Innovative, Reliable, and Efficient operations.
- Supports business unit and division in bids, tenders, contract amendments, and other opportunities for division growth.
- Supports local relationships (customer, vendors, and government) critical to the success of the operation.
- Manages personnel within union and/or non-union environment as applicable.
- Enforces, clarifies, follows and ensures strict adherence to Company policies, standards, and procedures, including those in the Integrated Management System (IMS) and QMS.
- Ensures strict adherence to company and government compliance related policies including the Code of Conduct and, the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), and local laws and regulations.
- Reviews and adheres to contracts to ensure company’s interests are maintained.
- Monitors and manages planned maintenance and approved capital spending.
- Responsible for inventory turnover and its maintenance.
- Oversees major equipment moves.
- Performs additional duties, responsibilities, and special projects as may be directed.
Qualifications
Necessary qualifications, skills and abilities
- Able to identify and understand functionality of various rig equipment.
- Able to identify and understand functionality of various tubular sizes and thread types.
- Knowledgeable and proficient in basic rigger’s role to ensure safe lifting operations are performed.
- Knowledgeable of mechanical systems and be skilled at working with hand and power tools.
- Knowledgeable of and capable of operating gantry cranes, tubular shuttles as required.
- Must have the capacity to work effectively under pressure in ambiguous and complex situations.
- Can demonstrate knowledge and be able to function the following equipment: o Diverter, Well head, BOP and associated control equipment o Automated pipe handling equipment o Drilling control and safety systems o Anti-collision surface equipment systems
- Can demonstrate knowledge and execution of the following operations: o Drilling and well operations o Well integrity and well control o Dropped objects prevention o Line of fire, exclusion zones and safe zone operations o Pipe measurement, number, strapping and tallying of pipes o Tripping and back reaming o Running casing and completions o Troubleshooting downhole problems and equipment failures
- Must have good verbal communication skills and be able to effectively communicate in English with staff, management, customers and vendors.
- Must possess sound reasoning skills, common sense and the ability to follow directions.
- Must possess basic mathematical skills (equivalent to a high school education) and be proficient in rig math.
- Education, experience, and certifications: o High School diploma is required o Must be able to obtain appropriate offshore or, onshore certifications o Should have at least 8 years of work experience pertaining to drilling. o Should have at least 6 years of supervisory experience.
